The best kitchen faucets with a side sprayer

Pull-down wands largely replaced side sprayers, and for most kitchens that was an improvement — one less hole, one less hose. But the side-spray configuration has a property the market forgot about, and for some households it is decisive.

A fixed spout ends in an ordinary aerator on a standard thread. A pull-down or pull-out spout ends in a spray wand, which does not. That single difference decides whether a whole category of accessories can be fitted at all.

Two common cases. A portable dishwasher connects with an adapter that screws onto the aerator thread — no thread, no connection, and no adapter solves it. A faucet-mount water filter clamps to the same place, which is why they will not fit a pull-down; that limitation is on the packaging and catches people out constantly. • A second deck hole, which you may not have — this configuration needs two at minimum, and a deck plate cannot create one.
• A second hose under the sink that will eventually perish, in a spot that is awkward to reach.
• Bench space on the deck, since the sprayer sits in its own escutcheon rather than inside the spout.
• Resale familiarity: buyers under forty may read a side sprayer as dated, fairly or not.

When your sink is already drilled for it and you would otherwise be covering a hole; when you own a portable dishwasher; when you want a faucet-mount filter; and when you are fitting a bridge faucet, where a side sprayer is the only way to get a spray at all — a bridge spout is fed from the crossbar and has nowhere for a hose to run. 2. Best period option

Kohler Artifacts K-76519-4 bridge faucet

Kohler · Best for period kitchens with two deck holes

If you want a bridge faucet, buy one from a manufacturer that will still stock parts for it in ten years, because a bridge faucet is a two-valve assembly and the valves are what ages. This is a genuine two-hole bridge with a separate side sprayer, which is how the configuration is meant to work — not a single-hole faucet with a decorative crossbar.

3. The modern alternative

The pull-out we would fit, and the one that quietly solves a second problem: it ships with a matching soap dispenser, so a three-hole sink converting to a single-hole faucet has something to put in the spare hole that was designed alongside it.
