Is 16 gauge or 18 gauge sink thicker?

16 gauge is thicker. Stainless steel gauge runs inversely to thickness: 16-gauge sheet is about 0.0625 inches and 18-gauge about 0.05, so 16-gauge is roughly 25% thicker. That buys dent resistance and less flex, but not quietness — sound-deadening pad coverage does that, and it is a separate specification.

What size sink fits a 36-inch cabinet?

A 33-inch sink. As a rule, subtract about three inches from the internal cabinet width to get the largest sink that will fit, and then check the manufacturer's stated minimum cabinet size, which accounts for the mounting hardware as well as the bowl.

What is the best kitchen sink material?

Stainless steel for tolerance of heat and impact, granite composite for hiding water spots and scratches, fireclay or enameled cast iron for a farmhouse look. Each has a real weakness — scratches, thermal shock and chipping respectively — so choose the failure mode you can live with.

Can you put an undermount sink in a laminate countertop?

Generally no. Laminate's particleboard core is exposed at the cutout and swells where water reaches it, and it is not designed to carry a sink from below. A drop-in sink is the correct choice for laminate — the flange covers and seals the cut edge, which is exactly what laminate needs.

What is a double bowl sink?

A sink divided into two separate basins by an internal wall, each with its own drain. It was designed for washing in one side and rinsing in the other, which is why it remains the better choice in a kitchen without a dishwasher. The cost is that nothing large lies flat in either bowl.

What is a basket strainer for a sink?

The complete drain fitting for a sink without a garbage disposal: a body seated in the drain opening, a tailpiece to the trap, and a removable basket that catches food and can close to hold water. It is a plumbing component, not an accessory — a drop-in screen is the accessory version.

Do granite composite sinks stain?

Light colors can, from turmeric, tea and tomato, and a mild abrasive cream usually removes it. Dark colors hide staining almost completely. The more important limitation is thermal shock: composite does not want a pan straight off the burner, where stainless does not care.

Is a pull-down or pull-out faucet better?

Neither in general. A pull-down suits a deep single-bowl sink and gives a taller arc; a pull-out suits a shallow basin, a low window sill, and filling containers away from the sink. Basin depth and the clearance above your sink decide it, not preference.

Are Moen or Delta kitchen faucets better?

Neither, at the same price. Delta has magnetic docking — nothing wears, which addresses the most commonly reported pull-down failure — and longer reach on comparable models. Moen has the taller arc and the best spot-resist finish for hard water. Both stock parts for discontinued models.

What is the standard faucet hole size?

1-3/8 inches in diameter. Most faucets specify a 1-3/8 inch minimum with a maximum around 1-1/2, so a slightly oversized hole is usually covered by the base or escutcheon. A few models require 1-1/2, so check the installation sheet.

Can I use a 1-hole faucet on a 3-hole sink?

Yes, with a deck plate, and most single-hole kitchen faucets include one in the box for exactly this. It sits under the faucet base and covers the two unused holes. The reverse is impossible: a three-hole widespread set cannot be fitted to a single-hole sink.

What faucet finish is best for hard water?

A satin or brushed finish — brushed nickel, stainless, or a branded spot-resist coating over one of those. The microscopic texture scatters light so mineral deposits are far less visible. Polished chrome is the worst choice, because a mirror shows every deposit.

How much does a faucet cartridge replacement cost?

The part is typically $10 to $50 for a major brand, and manufacturers often supply one free under a limited lifetime warranty. The labor is the larger cost if you call a plumber, which is why it is one of the more rewarding DIY repairs — usually a hex key and twenty minutes.

What horsepower garbage disposal do I need?

1/2 HP for one or two people who mostly scrape plates, 3/4 HP for three to five people or anyone grinding vegetable trimmings, 1 HP for a large household or a jamming history. Grind stages and component material change alongside the horsepower and matter just as much.

Are all garbage disposals septic safe?

No. Some manufacturers state their units are suitable for properly maintained septic systems and others do not, and the statement is a compatibility claim rather than an independent certification. Every disposal adds solids to the tank, so finer grinding and a shorter pumping interval both matter.

Can I replace a 1/2 HP garbage disposal with a 3/4 HP?

Usually yes, and it is the most common worthwhile upgrade. Check the overall height against the space between the sink underside and your trap arm, and check where the discharge outlet sits — below the trap arm means re-plumbing. Within one brand the flange is often reusable.

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not grinding?

The impeller plate is jammed. Switch the power off at the breaker, free the plate with the hex wrench in the socket underneath by turning it both ways, remove whatever caused the jam with pliers, then restore power and press the reset button on the underside.

How do I reset a garbage disposal?

Press the red reset button on the underside of the unit until it clicks. If nothing happens, check the wall switch and outlet, press the reset on any GFCI outlet in the circuit, then cycle the breaker at the panel. A humming unit is jammed rather than tripped — that is a different fix.

Do I need a garbage disposal for a dishwasher?

No. A dishwasher needs somewhere to discharge, and a standard drain assembly with a dishwasher tailpiece does that job. If you do fit a disposal, remember to knock out the molded dishwasher inlet plug — forgetting is the commonest reason a dishwasher will not drain afterwards.

What should you not put in a garbage disposal?

Bones, fruit pits, fats and oils, coffee grounds, eggshells, rice and pasta, bulk potato peel, fibrous vegetables like celery and corn husks, onion skins, shellfish shells, any non-food item including produce stickers, and caustic drain cleaner.
