Kitchen Faucets

Bar faucet vs kitchen faucet

They share the same 3/8-inch connections and often the same valve. What differs is reach, and reach is what decides whether water lands over the drain or near the back wall.

Two kitchen faucets of different heights side by side

How we assessed these: we read each manufacturer's own published page or specification sheet for the named model numbers on 2026-11-01 and rank on those figures only - spout height, reach, flow rate, mounting, valve and what the maker says about body material. We have not installed these faucets, no independent laboratory publishes comparable durability or spray-force data for bar faucets, and no such figure appears here. Kohler's bar faucet is absent because kohler.com did not respond when we tried to read it, and we will not quote a retailer's specification as a manufacturer's.

Short answer

A bar faucet is a kitchen faucet scaled for a small basin: shorter reach, usually a lower arc, almost always single-handle. The plumbing is identical, so either will connect. The difference that matters is reach - around 6-1/2 inches on a bar faucet against 8 to 9-1/2 inches on a main-sink faucet - and that decides where the water lands.

This comparison is unusually clean to make, because Moen sells the same faucet in both sizes. The Arbor 7594 is the full-size kitchen version and the Arbor 5995 is the bar version: same collection, same Reflex docking system, same 3/8-inch compression connection, same limited lifetime warranty. Everything that differs between them is the difference between the two categories, with the brand held constant.

What is the same

  • The plumbing. Both connect with 3/8-inch compression fittings to standard supply stops. There is no bar-specific valve, no bar-specific stop, no adapter needed either way.
  • The hole it mounts through. A standard 1-3/8-inch faucet hole takes both. A bar deck and a sink deck are drilled the same way.
  • The internals, within a family. The Arbor bar faucet uses the same Reflex docking as the full-size Arbor, and Moen's cartridge and parts channel covers both.
  • The certifications. Both carry the same lead-compliance statements - in Moen's case AB1953 and S152 compliance, and ADA-compliant operation.

Read from Moen's own product pages on 2026-11-01. Note the labeling difference: Moen gives the 7594 both a deck-to-outlet spout height and an overall height, and gives the 5995 a single height figure. The two height numbers are therefore NOT directly comparable, and we are not going to pretend they are. The figure that compares cleanly is reach, and the bar faucet gives up about 1-5/16 inches of it.

An inch and a third of reach sounds like nothing. On a sink it is the whole argument. A standard main bowl is around 22 inches front to back and roughly 16 to 18 inches side to side, with the drain near the middle. A bar bowl is often 9 to 15 inches across. Reach is calibrated to put the stream over the drain of the bowl the faucet was designed for, and moving a faucet to the wrong bowl moves the stream off the drain.

Can you put a bar faucet on a kitchen sink?

It will fit and it will work, and you will regret it. With about 6-1/2 inches of reach over a 22-inch bowl, the water lands in the back third of the basin. You end up pushing dishes toward the back wall to rinse them, and the back wall is the part of a sink that splashes most.

There is one real exception: a genuinely small main sink. If your kitchen sink is a compact 15 to 18-inch bowl - a galley kitchen, a studio, a wet bar doing double duty - then a bar faucet's reach is correctly sized for it and the lower arc may actually be a benefit under a low window. Our best kitchen faucets for small sinks roundup covers that case properly, including the compact full-size models that are usually the better answer.

Can you put a kitchen faucet on a bar sink?

More often than the reverse, yes - and this is where most people actually land. A full-size faucet over a bar basin gives you more reach than you need, which is harmless, and more height than you may want, which is not. The Arbor 7594 stands 15-1/2 inches overall. Over a 6-inch-deep bar bowl under a wall cabinet, that is both a splash risk and a clearance risk.

Two things make it work. First, check the deck-to-cabinet or deck-to-sill measurement against the faucet's overall height before you order, not after. Second, if the bar basin is shallow, accept that you want a low arc: a fixed-spout bar faucet like the Kraus Oletto stands 12 inches overall with an 8-inch spout height, and that difference is the difference between rinsing a glass and mopping a counter.

Price, and why the bar faucet is not cheaper

People expect the smaller faucet to cost less. It usually does not. Bar and prep faucets sell in far lower volumes than main-sink faucets, they use the same valves and the same finishing processes, and within a collection the bar model is frequently priced in the same bracket as the full-size one or above it. Check the live price on both before assuming the small one saves money - the buttons on this page read the current figure rather than one we typed in.

If budget is the constraint, the useful move is to drop a tier rather than drop a size. Our best kitchen faucets under $200 roundup covers the full-size models that hold up at that bracket.

Installation differences

There are two, and both are about the cabinet rather than the faucet. A bar sink cabinet is usually narrower and often shallower, so there is less room to get a basin wrench onto the mounting nut, and the supply stops are frequently closer to the back wall. A pull-down bar faucet also needs somewhere for the hose and counterweight to travel; in a cramped bar cabinet, that travel can foul on a shelf or a shutoff valve and the wand will stop retracting.

Otherwise the job is the same job, and our kitchen faucet installation guide applies without modification. If the wand on an existing pull-down has stopped seating, pull-down faucet will not retract is the diagnostic.

1. Best at the main sink

Moen Arbor 7594

Moen · Best for deep pots and hard-water kitchens

The pull-down to buy if you want the taller arc and a finish that hides water spots. Its 8-1/4" spout height is about half an inch more clearance than the Leland, which is the difference between washing a stock pot and fighting one. The tradeoff is reach: 7-7/8" against 9-3/16", so it works closer to the back of the bowl.

What works

  • The 8-1/4" spout height is genuine pot clearance, not decorative arc
  • Power Boost concentrates the stream for filling and rinsing without raising the rated flow
  • Spot Resist Stainless is the single most useful finish choice in a hard-water house
  • Reflex docking has been in Moen's line long enough that replacement wands are easy to find

What does not

  • Reach is 7-7/8", over an inch shorter than the Leland — on a wide double bowl you will notice
  • Moen publishes no independent noise or durability measurement, and neither do we
  • The spot-resist coating is a finish, not armor; abrasive cleaners still dull it

Skip it if

Skip it if you have a wide double-bowl sink and want one faucet to reach both drains comfortably — buy reach instead of height.

2. Best at the bar sink

Moen Arbor 5995 bar faucet

Moen · Best for bar sinks that get real use

The bar faucet to buy if the bar sink is the one you actually work in. It is the Arbor shape shrunk to bar scale, with the same Reflex docking as the full-size kitchen model, and Moen publishes the two figures that decide fit: 14.38 inches of spout height and 6.56 inches of reach. The mounting is the quiet advantage — one or three holes, so it drops into an old three-hole bar deck without a separate plate purchase.

What works

  • Reflex docking is the same system as the full-size Arbor, so the wand seats the same way and replacement wands are a stocked part
  • One or three hole mounting — an old three-hole bar deck needs no extra escutcheon
  • 68" hose is long for a bar faucet, which is what makes it usable for filling a cooler on the floor
  • 1.5 gpm with a cleaning-rinse function, so the lower flow rate is not a usability penalty

What does not

  • At 14.38" of published spout height this is a tall faucet for a small basin, and a shallow bar bowl will splash
  • Moen publishes one height figure for this model rather than separate deck-to-outlet and overall numbers, so the exact clearance under the spout is not a published figure — measure your window sill before ordering
  • The handle mounts on the right only; a left-hand approach to a corner bar sink is awkward
  • No independent lab publishes durability or finish-wear data for this model, and neither do we

Skip it if

Skip it if your bar basin is shallow — under about six inches deep, a 14-inch arc turns rinsing a glass into a splash problem. Buy the low-arc Oletto instead.

3. Best where clearance is tight

Kraus Oletto KPF-2822 bar faucet

Kraus · Best for shallow basins and low clearance

The bar faucet for a shallow basin, and the only one of the three whose body material Kraus actually publishes: lead-free solid brass with a brass waterway. At 12 inches overall and 8 inches of spout height it fits under a low cabinet or a window, and the tradeoff is honest — one spray function, no wand, nothing to dock.

What works

  • Lead-free solid brass body with a brass waterway, published as such — most faucets at this bracket publish no body material at all
  • 8" spout height and 12" overall is genuinely low-clearance: it fits under a window sill or a wall cabinet a pull-down bar faucet would hit
  • Published reach of 6-1/2" is within a quarter inch of the Moen bar faucet despite being half the height
  • Brushed Brass and Spot Free Antique Champagne Bronze are catalog finishes, so a warm bar faucet does not mean a boutique purchase

What does not

  • One spray function and no pull-down wand — you cannot aim water at the sides of the bowl, which is the main reason to want a wand at a prep sink
  • Single hole only, so a three-hole bar deck needs a separate deck plate that is not in the box
  • 1.8 gpm, the highest of the three, from the smallest faucet
  • Kraus publishes the cycle test for the cartridge but no durability or finish-wear data for the faucet as a whole, and no independent lab publishes one

Skip it if

Skip it if the bar sink is where you wash dishes. Without a wand you will be rinsing around the bowl by hand, and a pull-down bar faucet solves exactly that.

Which one you should buy

Buy the faucet sized for the bowl it will stand over. If that bowl is your main sink, buy a main-sink faucet. If it is a bar or prep basin, buy a bar faucet and choose the arc by the depth of the basin and the clearance above it. The best bar sink faucets roundup ranks the three bar models whose makers publish enough to check fit, and faucet height and reach is the measurement walkthrough for either case.

What to take away

  • The connections, mounting hole and certifications are the same. Reach is the real difference.
  • Within the Moen Arbor family the bar version gives up about 1-5/16 inches of reach.
  • A bar faucet on a standard main sink puts the water in the back third of the bowl.
  • A main-sink faucet on a bar sink usually works - check overall height against the cabinet first.
  • Smaller does not mean cheaper; bar models often price level with or above the full-size version.

How we sourced this page

Every figure on this page came from one of the following. Where a manufacturer or an independent lab does not publish a number, we say so rather than estimate it.

Common questions

Is a bar faucet the same as a prep faucet?
In the catalog, yes - most makers label the category "bar/prep" and sell one faucet for both. The distinction people draw is in use: a bar sink mostly fills glasses and holds ice, a prep sink gets produce washed in it. That difference decides whether you want a pull-down wand, not which faucet category you shop.
Will a bar faucet fit a standard kitchen sink hole?
Yes. Both bar and kitchen faucets mount through a standard faucet hole and connect with 3/8-inch compression fittings. Fit is not the problem with that swap - reach is.
Do bar faucets use less water?
Not inherently. Flow ratings overlap: the Moen Arbor bar faucet is rated 1.5 gpm, the same as the full-size Arbor, while two other bar faucets we checked are rated 1.8 gpm. Bar faucets do use less water in practice, because they run for seconds at a time rather than through a sink full of dishes.
Can I use a kitchen faucet deck plate on a bar sink?
Usually only within the same brand and often only within the same collection, because the plate has to match the faucet's base casting and gasket. If your bar deck has three holes, the cleaner answer is a faucet that publishes a one-or-three-hole mounting option.
Which is better for a small kitchen sink, a bar faucet or a compact kitchen faucet?
A compact kitchen faucet, in most cases. It keeps main-sink reach while cutting height, which is the combination a small bowl under a window actually needs. A bar faucet cuts reach as well, and on anything wider than about 18 inches you will feel that.
