Garbage disposal leaking: the location tells you the answer
A leak at the top is a seal you can re-bed. A leak at the bottom is the end of the unit. Find out which before you buy anything.

Short answer
A leak from the top, where the unit meets the sink, is the flange seal — re-bed it in fresh plumber's putty. A leak from the side is the discharge tube or dishwasher inlet connection — replace the gasket or tighten the clamp. A leak from the bottom of the unit is a failed internal seal, and that is not repairable: the disposal needs replacing.
Leak at the top: the sink flange
If water appears where the disposal meets the underside of the sink, the seal between the sink flange and the sink is failing. That seal is plumber's putty, and it hardens and shrinks over years. It is the most common disposal leak and it is genuinely fixable.
The fix: with the power off, disconnect the discharge and the dishwasher hose, support and remove the unit, loosen the mounting assembly, lift the flange out, scrape every trace of old putty from the sink opening, bed a new rope of putty under the flange lip and re-clamp. Leak at the side: the connections
Two candidates, both easy. The discharge tube joins the unit at a flange with a gasket and two screws — the gasket perishes, and a new one comes with any replacement discharge tube. The dishwasher inlet nipple is held by a hose clamp, and clamps corrode and loosen.
One more, specific to new installations: if a dishwasher connects and the molded inlet plug was never knocked out, the hose will weep at the nipple because water has nowhere to go. Leak at the bottom: the end of the unit
Water dripping from the base of the disposal body, particularly around the center of the base plate, means the internal seal between the grinding chamber and the motor has failed. That seal is not a serviceable part: there is no kit, no accessible fastener, and water in the motor housing is the failure mode that finishes a disposal.
It is worth being certain before you write the unit off, because water from a leaking flange runs down the outside of the body and drips from the bottom too. That is exactly why the dry-it-and-watch method matters — a top leak and a bottom leak drip in the same place.

What about the trap and tailpiece?
Not all under-sink water is the disposal's fault. Slip joints at the P-trap use washers that perish, and a trap that has been disturbed during any other work often weeps afterwards. Those are cheap parts and a hand-tight fix. If the water appears below the disposal but the unit itself is dry when you watch it drain, look at the trap joints next.
Before you replace, check the warranty
A failed internal seal within the warranty period is exactly what these warranties cover, and the terms are meaningful: InSinkErator publishes five years of in-home service on the Badger 5 and nine on the Evolution .75HP, while Waste King publishes 20 years limited on the L-8000. In-home service means someone attends rather than posting a part.

The baseline every other disposal is measured against, and an honest buy for a small household as long as you know what you are getting: half a horsepower, one grind stage, and galvanized steel grind components rather than stainless. It is short at 11-1/2", which is often the deciding factor in a shallow cabinet.
