Garbage disposal brands, and what each one is willing to publish

This is a two-brand category with a long tail, and the tail is mostly rebadged. What matters is not who owns the label but what the specification sheet says — and whether the mounting hardware you will need in five years is still sold.

The largest range and the clearest documentation. Its published specifications state horsepower, grind stages, grind component material, chamber capacity and overall height per model, which is exactly what you need to compare units and check fit. The engineering approach is high torque and multiple reduction stages: the Evolution line publishes three-stage MultiGrind against one stage in a standard disposer, with stainless grind components and SoundSeal insulation.

Two practical advantages beyond the hardware. Warranty service is in-home rather than send-it-back on the Evolution and Badger lines — five years on the Badger 5, nine on the Evolution .75HP. And the parts network is the deepest in the category: mounting assemblies, sink flanges, splash guards and wrenchettes are stocked widely, which matters because those are the parts that perish or get lost.

The value brand with a genuinely different engineering answer: a permanent-magnet motor spinning at 2800 rpm rather than a slower induction motor with more grind stages. That gives high throughput per dollar in a light body — the L-8000 is 11.94 lb, which makes a solo overhead installation realistic — with a pre-attached power cord and an EZ Mount twist-and-lock flange.

The warranty term is the longest in the category at 20 years limited on the L-8000, and it is worth reading what kind of promise that is: a limited warranty typically replaces the part while the labor is yours, where in-home service sends someone. Several well-known kitchen brands sell disposals, and in this category the badge frequently sits on a unit built by one of the two specialists or by a contract manufacturer. That is not a criticism — the hardware can be perfectly good. It does mean the brand name tells you less here than it does in faucets, and the specification sheet tells you more.

1. 1Grind stages. One or three. This predicts fibrous-waste handling and output fineness better than horsepower.
2. 2Grind component material. Stainless or galvanized steel. The Badger 5 sheet says galvanized; the Evolution line says stainless.

4. 4Warranty type as well as term. In-home service against limited parts cover is a bigger difference than the number of years.

The disposal we would fit in most houses. Three-quarters of a horsepower with three-stage grinding and stainless grind components is the point on the range where fibrous waste stops being a gamble, and SoundSeal makes it noticeably quieter than a Badger. The baseline every other disposal is measured against, and an honest buy for a small household as long as you know what you are getting: half a horsepower, one grind stage, and galvanized steel grind components rather than stainless. Failure rates, service life, or comparable noise measurements. Consumer Reports measures grind speed, grind fineness and noise in its own laboratory — the only well-known independent testing in this category — and paywalls the results. No manufacturer publishes a decibel figure measured the same way as a competitor's.

So a brand reliability ranking is not something anyone can produce honestly. The best available proxy is warranty length and type, because that is the manufacturer betting its own money on how long the unit will last: five years in-home, nine years in-home, twenty years limited. Read those as the closest thing to a published durability claim in the category.
